Spanish Early Colonization
When Cristopher Columbus first reported about the New World the Spanish interest in their new prospect rose and with this many people wanted to Colonize their new lands however the Spanish only allowed Catholics to settle there.
Spanish Conversion
The Spanish were very religiously intolerant at this time because they wanted to be unified under Catholicism and because of this they were very forceful with their conversions in not only the new world, but there own population wasn't safe as the Spanish would kick out their Jewish population with the Alhambra decree in 1492, but later kick out their Muslim population in 1502.
English Conversion, and ColonizationThe religious oppression of the English comes from the protestant reformation in 1517 with Martin Luther, England however did not split from the Catholic church until 1534 when King Henry the Eighth officially split from the Roman Catholic faith by forming the new Church of England.

This however would see to the English cracking down and forcing everyone to convert to the new Church of England. This is why in 1607 when the first colony of Jamestown was formed many people saw America as a escape from the religious persecution. This is seen as in 1620 a group called the pilgrims set out for the new world and landed on Plymouth forming a colony there. This would lead others to follow in there footsteps as in 1630 another group called the puritans landed in Massachusetts and formed the Massachusetts bay colony.

English Reforms and Colonial Resistance
Even though America was known for a new chance to get away from religious oppression, the English eventually gained control and began to crack down and reform there new colonies. This however backfires and sees heavy Colonial Resistance and sees the Colonies move towards open Rebellion.
This Resistance is eventually met with force and this sees the beginning of the revolutionary war. This war sees America grow from fighting merely gorilla style warfare to being able to match the British in a line battle. This eventually sees the revolutionaries gaining the upper hand and ending with the British surrendering at Yorktown and later signing the Treaty of Paris and capitulating to the N]new United States of America

Summary
Religious intolerance plagued the entire world while America was being found, and up to the point of it becoming a Nation of its own. It was to the point where even America being seen as a getaway for many people trying to practice their religion freely, eventually with the control and reformations the colonies resisted and eventually rebelled fighting to secure there own Nation, and after there Nation was secured the first rights that was written down and presented guarantees freedom of religion.
